Deliveroo reports 117% surge in vegan orders

Food order and delivery platform Deliveroo has seen a considerable increase in demand for plant-based food in the last year, with orders for vegan dishes up 117% on the previous 12 months.

The company claims to have seen a 153% rise in searches for 'vegan' food in the app in the first week of January 2021 compared to the month before, likely driven by Brits' participation in the Veganuary campaign, which encourages people to eliminate animal products from their diets throughout the first month of the year.

According to the company, more restaurants than ever have introduced plant-based menus and dishes to their regular offering, meaning there are now over 15,000 plant-based and vegan-friendly restaurants from across the UK available on the platform.

Deliveroo confirms that the cities with the most vegan orders (as a proportion to their total orders) this year in order are: Brighton, Bristol, Coventry, Leeds, Manchester, York, Liverpool, Edinburgh, Norwich and London.

The UK's top vegan dishes revealed

Last year, the platform identified the growing popularity of imitation meats as the most impactul trend in the plant-based category – something that has further accelerated this year, making it into the makority if Deliveroo's most popular vegan dishes ordered on the platform across the UK in 2021:

  1. Acai Berry Bowl – Juicebaby
  2. The Big Oovee – Oowee Vegan
  3. The Halo Burger – Halo Burger
  4. Spinach Gyoza – Mildreds
  5. Colonel (VG) – The Full Nelson
  6. Vegan Doner Kebab – What The Pitta
  7. Chick'n Filler Roll – Vegan Sandwich Co
  8. Burger Combo – Neat Burger
  9. Falafel Wrap – Go Falafel
  10. New York Melt – The Vurger Co

Elena Devis, vegan category lead at Deliveroo, comments: "Earlier this year, we asked the UK what they would like to see more of on delivery platforms and nearly half of the survey respondents (48.5%) said they were keen to see more meat-free options.

"The UK’s appetite for vegan food is one that just seems to be getting bigger and bigger every year, which is why we're proud to offer such an incredible range of plant-based dishes available across restaurant and grocery menus. Vegan and plant-based food is a growth area we are really excited by at Deliveroo so we’re super happy to be supporting Veganuary again this year.”
