Borrowdale Hotel completes £650k refurbishment

The Lake District's historic Borrowdale Hotel has completed a £650,000 renovation of its ground floor and restaurant.

The traditional hotel, which first opened in 1866, closed at the beginning of 2023 for two months to modernise its reception, restaurant and two lounge areas.

Kit and Charles Graves and their daughter, Dani Hope, who own and operate Lake District Hotels Ltd, wanted to bring a more contemporary design scheme to the venue, while being careful to preserve the traditional interiors and historic features.

"Making big changes to the Borrowdale Hotel was always going to be a risk because there are so many returning customers who enjoy the hotel’s historic features. It was important for us to give them a space that retains the hotel’s heritage feel, but in a more distinctly modern fashion that has moved with the times," says Hope. "We are confident that we have produced a product that ticks both boxes."

The most notable transformation can be seen in the reimagined hotel restaurant, which has been converted into a graceful, light-flooded and elegant space. Flauti tiles have been incorporated into a new breakfast bar, while its newly plastered ceiling features intricate beading, with the space also showcasing green marble tables and bespoke banquette seating.
