Knorr Professional launches new chef competition

Entries to the inaugural Scottish Chef of the Year competition are now open, giving the Scottish culinary scene the chance to celebrate its best up-and-coming talent.

Knorr Professional has launched the competition to unearth and recognise the next generation of Scottish chefs, selected from the nation's top catering colleges.

The event boasts an esteemed judging panel, led by chef Gary Maclean, who will be joined by Adam Handling MBE and Audrey Crone, executive chef of Unilever Ireland.

Glasgow-born Maclean runs his own seafood restaurant in Edinburgh. He also won MasterChef the Professionals in 2016 and is Scotland's first National Chef.

"This competition is not just about finding the best young chef, it's about nurturing creativity, passion and the future of Scottish culinary excellence through Scotland's next generation," says Maclean.

Handling adds: "It's great to be involved in this competition during its first year. As a very proud Scotsman, a competition that recognises Scottish students is close to my heart and I can't wait to see what these young chefs produce. I'm sure they'll make Scotland proud!"

The panel will guide and evaluate shortlisted students in teams, comprised of a head chef and assistant, as they showcase their expertise in a live final on 21 March at the City of Glasgow College. Students will deliver a two-course meal, on top of completing a skills test. Competitors will be asked to submit their menu ideas digitally, from which the eight finalists will be chosen.

Knorr Professional, part of Unilever Food Solutions, has put together a brief for the competition, asking students to put their twist on two food trends: Modernised Comfort Food and Irresistible Vegetables.

Prizes will be awarded to first, second and third place, with the overall winner, their lecturer and assistant receiving an all-expenses paid trip to Italy.
