Fuji Hiro Leeds announces comeback
An independent Japanese restaurant in Leeds is set to reopen at the Merrion Centre this summer, following its closure at the start of the year.
Fuji Hiro is relaunching under new management, complete with a fresh new look, a refined menu and a renewed focus.
A Leeds institution
Fuji Hiro originally opened in 1997, renowned for its straightforward approach to authentic Japanese cuisine. When its former owners announced its closure in early 2025, the news was met with widespread disappointment from loyal fans.
Now, the restaurant is preparing to welcome diners once again, following investment from Leeds-born entrepreneur James Douglas.
Douglas, co-founder of restaurant chain Red's True Barbecue, has acquired the lease and will be working closely alongside members of the original kitchen team to revive Fuji Hiro's flavours and culinary heritage.
The new interior fit-out is currently underway, with the restaurant scheduled to open on June 12.
"Fuji Hiro has held a special place in the hearts of Leeds locals for decades," says Douglas. "I've been a fan since it first opened its doors in 1997, so to now take the reins and help write its next chapter is a real honour.
"We didn't want to lose what made Fuji Hiro special, so we've kept as much of the original feel as possible," he adds. "We've taken things right back to where it all started with a stripped-back menu of the core dishes it's famous for, such as ramen, noodles gyoza and katsu.:
