Des Gunewardena announces Canary Wharf venture

Des Gunewardena has signed a deal with Canary Wharf Group (CWG) to open a brand-new concept in Canary Wharf in Q4.

Gunewardena, co-founder and former CEO of the D&D London restaurant group, is transforming a 9,500 sq ft space into a venue comprising indoor restaurants and bars with private dining spaces. It will also have outdoor terraces with views of Canada Square. Further details are set to be announced ahead of the venue's opening later this year.

This will be the second new restaurant from Gunewardena since his departure from D&D, following his announcement of a new flagship restaurant, bar and event space at The Royal Exchange in December.

The evolution of Canary Wharf

Having shifted from being solely a business hub into a mixed-use neighbourhood by diversifying its offering, Canary Wharf now has an increased number of residential spaces alongside retail outlets and culture and leisure spots.

In 2023, Canary Wharf saw over 67.2 million visitors, with CWG reporting 97% occupancy for this year, with sales at an all-time high.

Canary Wharf already has a thriving F&B scene. The neighbourhood saw a spate of new openings following the pandemic, including Hawksmoor, Dishoom and Blacklock. Hovarda, Kricket and Roe from the Fallow team are set to land in 2024, alongside Gunewardena's new project.

"Canary Wharf is growing and changing," he says. "No longer just about work, it is increasingly a part of London people are choosing to live in and visit for its shops, restaurants, arts and culture. This is why a number of leading restaurateurs have chosen to open here post-Covid – and why I am very excited about becoming part of the Canary Wharf scene."
