Covent Garden welcomes new south east Asian kitchen

Sunda Kitchen will open its doors tomorrow (7 September), bringing South East Asian cuisine and creative cocktails to Covent Garden.

The team behind the launch includes Jamie Younger (The Begging Bowl, Peckham), Phil Sutton (The Perry Hill Pub, Catford) and Adam Papa (Happiness Forgets and Ever After, Shoreditch), who bring a wealth of expertise to this new casual dining concept.

Named after the tectonic plate that joins large stretches of South East Asia, the restaurant's menu is inspired by food from Vietnam, Thailand and Malaysia, with many of the dishes being designed to share. Head chef Charles Lee leads the kitchen, following recent roles as consulting head chef in the Soho restaurant, Robata, as well as modern Korean restaurant, Jinjuu, plus stints working with celebrated chefs such as Marcus Wareing (Petrus) and Angela Hartnett (The Connaught).

Sample dishes include salmon and avocado taki taki-style seaweed with chilli oil; Vietnamese jellyfish salad with pickled fennel and chilli; Malaysian red chicken curry; Sambal aubergine with grilled chilli and pickled mushroom; and banana fritter speedboat with ice cream and chocolate sauce.

The cocktail menu includes the classics with a signature Sunda twist, such as the Thai Negroni with lemongrass gin, coconut campari and sweet vermouth; and the Spicy Mojito with rum, mint, citrus, herbal liqueur, soda and chilli; alongside slushies such as the lychee daiquiri, Vietnamese iced coffee and Sunda Colada.

Papa comments on the opening: "Sunda Kitchen is a relaxed, accessible eatery that has something for everyone, whether you're looking for a quick after work drink, midweek lunch or cocktail with some tasty sharing plates. Drop by and let us brighten up your day."
